Description
The 7 x 7 Kensington Summerhouse from Shire is a classic example of a traditional style summerhouse. It blends harmoniously in a range of garden styles, but of course will look most at home in a traditional garden. If you can picture yourself enjoying a drink or two in the summer months in the beauty of your garden, or perhaps you see yourself painting, drawing or reading in a picturesque setting, then the Kensington could be just the place for it.
The almost entirely glazed front, including ¾ length glazed double doors, and a large opening side window ensure that buckets of light can flood the interior of the Kensington. This makes spending time inside a real pleasure and makes it feel bright, airy and spacious. Plus, you can throw the window and doors open on an extra-sunny day to spill out into your garden or let in a cool breeze. Customers who purchase the Kensington are usually lovers of the traditional. With its elegant, Georgian-style windows, proper joinery doors, a traditional apex roof and a charming, scalloped facia, it is easy to see where the Kensington’s classic appeal comes from. You can add an optional veranda too if you want to add a beautiful finishing touch to the Kensington's classic good looks.
Features
The Kensington is built to the same high standard that you will find from any Shire Summerhouse. Shire summerhouses also include a number of quality features that you might not expect given their affordability. The windows and doors have proper, handcrafted joinery, instead of the glued-on glazing bars that you often find on inferior summerhouses. They are properly morticed and tenoned and the window also has a unique profiled “lip” that covers the aperture of the opening in the panel, making it extra weather resistant. Casement stays have 2 levels of opening. The glazing is 3mm horticultural glass which can be relied upon to keep its clarity. This is often preferred to plastic glazing materials like polycarbonate or styrene, which often dull over time. The Kensington features a tongue and groove roof and floor, a premium option compared with alternatives which can be a bit of an eyesore. Whereas many garden buildings will use uglier and often weaker alternatives like OSB, using tongue and groove gives a more durable floor and a more weather-resistant roof.
The Kensington has shiplap tongue and groove cladding. This means the individual boards close together tightly to act as a great barrier to the elements. The shiplap profile gives a slight, overlapping “lip” which aids water run-off and increases the summerhouse’s weather protection. The framework on the Kensington, which really gives the building its strength, is a robust 34mm x 34mm, which is as much as 20% thicker than the framing you will find on many alternative garden buildings in this price bracket. The timber used is a continental slow grown timber. Slower grown timber means a tighter grain, extra strength and a longer life.
The Kensington is supplied with detailed instructions and all the fixings needed, including roofing felt, to complete assembly. Alternatively, an assembly service is available if you would like your summerhouse built for you quickly and professionally.
Treatment
This Kensington Summerhouse is dip treated. This means it has been pre-treated with a base coat to protect the timber during manufacture and transit (colour can vary from the picture shown). Dip treated buildings have a 10-year guarantee against rot, but you must follow all the manufacturer’s care guidelines to ensure the guarantee remains valid. This includes using an appropriate product to treat your building after construction and carrying out periodic re-treatment. Shire recommends Protek Paint, available to purchase from elbec for a fantastic price. Protek have an excellent range of colours and stains while providing probably the best timber protection you can buy.
